Winter Skin Care Tips

Winter is rough on your skin. The low humidity common during the winter, the cold air and relentless central heating systems sucks moisture right out of the skin often leaving it tight, itchy and causes common skin conditions such as eczema to flare up. Under these conditions, fine lines look deeper, skin uncomfortable, complexions uneven and no one looks or feels their best. Here are some tips for banishing your dry skin during the most punishing season of the year.
  •  Use a Humidifier:  With the heat on and the windows closed, the air inside your home can become very dry causing dryness and itching skin. Use a humidifier to place moisture in the air. They're not too pricey, so get one for each room of the house that you spend a lot of time in (the   bedroom being the most important).

·       Drink Plenty of Water:  Of course this is a year round tip, but often avoided during the winter months.  Just because you’re not working up a sweat is not a reason to stop drinking at least eight glasses a water a day.  Replenishing your body with H2O gives you energy, benefits your overall health, helps your not over eat, and helps your skin from becoming dehydrated.

·         Moisturize Everyday:  Every morning when you get out of the bath apply liberally all over your body.  For facial and body moisturizers, you may want to switch to a thicker formula during the winter months.  And don’t forget to take a small bottle of lotion with you and re-apply often during the day.

·         Exfoliate:  Exfoliating every few days will rid your skin of built up dead skin cells and expose a fresh layer of skin.  Use a gentle facial exfoliant and avoid harsh chemicals.  Exfoliating every few days will keep your fresh layer of skin absorb the moisturizers that you apply every day.

·         Use Sunscreen Daily.  Just because the sun isn't shining as bright or as often as it did during the summer doesn't mean it won't still burn or cause prematurely aging.  Using sunscreen should be a part of your daily skin care routine all year long.

·         Take shorter and cooler showers: During the winter months try to keep your body at a consistent temperature.  Taking a hot shower will quickly rid your body of the essentials oils for maintaining a normal skin balance.

·         Stop Licking your Lips: When our lips feel dry, we lick them. Of course, this only leaves them more chapped. Keep a tube or jar of lip balm with you at all times, and apply every time you get the temptation to lick those dry lips.

·         Take care of your immune system:  A good immune system will help you from catching so many of the colds that are prevalent in winter. Sick people are more likely to develop skin problems. Include plenty of vitamin C and your daily vitamins in your diet.

·         Take your Flaxseed Daily:  Again this is a year round tip that should not be stopped in the winter.  Flaxseed has numerous overall health benefits because it is rich in essential fatty acids. It also helps maintain the moisture in your body.

·         Avoid Blow Drying your Hair if Possible:  Blow drying your hair not only rids your hair of the essential moisture needed for a healthy scalp and hair, but it also dries out your face and body because of the excess hot air.

·         Dress in layers: The most common triggers of the scratch/itch cycle are sweating and overheating. Wearing layers allows you to remove clothing as needed to prevent overheating. Be sure to wear loose-fitting natural fabrics next to your skin.

·         Wear Bronzer:  This is not really a skin care tip, but rather a way to achieve that healthy glow that helps us beat the winter blues!
